The new year begins and we practice patience, waiting for the perfect time to prepare the soil for the year ahead. Too much rain and the allotment turns into a bog, too little and the heavy clay becomes concrete. However the least weekend in March was the time to power up the allotments rotavator to break down the heavy clay clots in to a finer tilth. This is two weeks later than 2016.
I’d like to move towards a no dig system but at the moment the soil is just too compacted and heavy. Give it a couple of years of incorporating organic matter and grit and I should get it to a point where I can get it to the perfect point where I can just layer on organic matter without digging each year like some of the plot holders here.
